5. Mbale City
Mbale City is located in the eastern region of Uganda, approximately 225 kilometers northeast of the capital city, Kampala. Situated at an average elevation of 1156 meters above sea level, Mbale has emerged as one of Uganda's largest cities. The city is home to prestigious educational institutions like the main campus of Islamic University in Uganda, the Bala campus of Uganda Martyrs University, and the Livingstone International University.
Notably, the headquarters of the third division of the Uganda People's Defence Forces are also located in Mbale City. In 2019, the Ugandan cabinet awarded Mbale City the status of a city, effective July 2021. However, the date was revised to 1 July 2020. According to the 2002 national census, the population of Mbale was approximately 71,130. In 2010, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics estimated the population to be around 81,900, and in 2014, the national population census recorded a population of 96,189.
4. Gulu City
Gulu City is situated in the northern region of Uganda, about 333 kilometers north of Kampala. The city experiences a tropical climate according to the Copen Climate Classification System. Gulu has faced numerous challenges in the past, including insurgencies led by the Lord's Resistance Army under Joseph Kony in the 1990s. However, in recent times, Gulu has witnessed significant development in its education, transport, and health sectors.
Gulu City is served by Gulu Airport, the second largest airport in Uganda after Entebbe International Airport. The 2002 national population census reported Gulu's population at 119,430. By 2014, the population had increased to 152,430 people, showcasing the city's growth and potential.
3. Mbarara City
Mbarara City is located in the western region of Uganda, approximately 270 kilometers southwest of Kampala. With an average elevation of about 1147 meters above sea level, Mbarara has emerged as a prominent city, surpassing Gulu, Jinja, and Entebbe. It is the second-largest urban center in Uganda after Kampala in terms of importance, industry, and infrastructure.
Mbarara is home to Mbarara University of Science and Technology, which has contributed to its growth and development. The city's population has steadily increased since its founding in 1901, rising from 16,078 people in 1969 to 69,363 in 2002. According to the August 2014 national population census, Mbarara's population reached 195,013. By 2020, the population had further increased to 221,300 people, representing a 13% growth compared to 2014.
2. Arua City
Arua City is a thriving commercial center located within the West Nile sub-region of northern Uganda. Situated approximately 475 kilometers northwest of Kampala, Arua City is known for its diverse religious composition. The central division of Arua City is occupied by 55% Muslims, 23% Catholics, and 19% Anglicans.
In 2002, the census enumerated Arua's population at 43,929. By August 2014, the population had increased to 61,962. In May 2019, the Ugandan cabinet granted Arua City the status of a city, effective 1 July 2020. This decision led to the inclusion of Arua Municipality and the surrounding Aibu County, resulting in a population of approximately 420,000 people. Arua now stands as the second-largest city in Uganda, just behind Kampala.

Kampala City takes the crown as the largest city and the capital of Uganda. It is also considered one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa, with an annual population growth rate of 4%. Kampala has consistently been ranked as East Africa's best city to live in, surpassing Kigali and Nairobi.
Being the capital city and economic hub of Uganda, Kampala attracts a diverse ethnic population from all parts of the country and neighboring countries. In 2002, Kampala's population was around 1.1 million. However, by 2019, the population had soared to over 1,650,000, reflecting the city's rapid growth and urbanization.
